Literacy & Reading
Expert readers, Expert writers, Expert speakers
Our literacy strategy at Buile Hill Academy is centred on empowering our pupils to become expert readers, writers and speakers. This year in particular, we are focussed on exposing our students to as much reading as possible so that students build up confidence in reading and develop a life-long love for reading beyond the classroom. Please watch the video from our literacy coordinator, explore the links found on this page and read through the list below to get a better understanding of the reading and literacy strategies in place at Buile Hill Academy.
• Accelerated Reader (a reading programme which sees students reading with quizzes and activities to help hone their reading skills). Click here to watch how Renaissance Accelerated Reader works -https://youtu.be/FuU7GC6QZTE
• Form time reading (pupils in years 7-9 will read 3 novels with their form tutor a year - totalling 9 books by the end of year 9)
• Form time reading for KS4 pupils has them engaging with academic and challenging texts using a guided/reciprocal reading approach.
• Bookflix (a reading/reviewing reward scheme to encourage reading for pleasure). We’ve had amazing successes with this and the pupils have loved engaging and taking part in this rewarding scheme.
• Buile Hill Canon (50 KS3 and 50 KS4 world renowned books made available in the library)
• Whole school reciprocal reading approach (structured method of guided reading where children are gradually taught to take on group roles to explore and find meaning in texts).
• Across the school and in each classroom, we have academic and subject specific vocabulary displays for each subject – greater exposing our pupils to challenging language.
