Religious Studies

Our Vision and Approach in RS

The RS department at Buile Hill provides an opportunity for KS3 pupils to explore the continuing importance and significance of religious beliefs and other beliefs and worldviews in shaping human minds, lives, politics and communities. It will allow pupils to explore their own positions regarding religion and worldviews in an open and non-judgemental environment where all beliefs are respected. It will build curiosity towards the worldviews of others in engaged and engaging ways, that will enable them to interact with people of all backgrounds in their local, national, and international communities. It will help pupils to develop positive attitudes of cooperation, understanding and respect towards people from all religions and worldviews, including those with no religious affiliation. RS will help build community cohesion between diverse belief groups, enabling the formation of healthy and successful friendships, political advocates, business relations and other relationships.

What our students will learn:

Buile Hill Academy follows the locally agreed syllabus for Religious Education, from the Greater Manchester Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education. This syllabus reinforces the concept of RE as an important academic discipline for our local area, highlighting the roles of religion in the Greater Manchester area and enabling the development of skills and attitudes so that our pupils can explore wider issues of religion and belief in religiously literate ways. This syllabus offers an inclusive education to all our young people, whatever their personal worldviews might be and prepares the children and young people of our area for active citizenship in a diverse and rapidly changing world. Because RS is a new subject at Buile Hill, the following grid represents a transitional model in order to provide an introduction to RS, especially for those year groups who are new to the discipline. This will be updated on a yearly basis.

How you can support your child’s learning in RS:

• Encourage discussion about world events in relation to Religion, such as international celebrations and religious conflicts.

• Discuss your views and the views of others in an atmosphere of curiosity and open-mindedness, including a wide range of different beliefs and ideas.

• Students will receive retrieval knowledge homework quizzes every two weeks.

• There are many excellent textbooks, website, blogs and YouTube channels to support RS learning, and details of these are listed below.
