In today's multi media environment graphics and the use of presentation media is used in every walk of life. Young people are already experts in page layouts and font design before they arrive at Buile Hill Academy. The familiarity and developed subject knowledge in this area from social media to advertising and marketing makes the subject one that students immediately feel confident with. Students enjoy practical lessons making 3D graphic products and seeing their own ideas develop into 3D art forms.

In the department we have:

  • A fully equipped Graphics workshop
  • An experienced dedicated technician
  • Good use of ICT and multimedia facilities (mac and pc)
  • An annual trip to London to the Tate Modern and also to study the graphic London Underground map.

Key Stage 3

In year 7 take on 'Pop Up Card' project that shows students the future of how this discipline is beginning to come alive in a new and exciting format. The students look at paper modelling experts such as Robert Sabouda and a variety of designers and design movements to influence the project that they create in a hands-on practical, using modelling and development to produce a high quality product. A wide range of research based homework engages students to learn, through independent tasks.

Tasks involve Workshop Safety, Paper Mechanisms, Rendering, 3D Sketching and Finishing Techniques.

In year 8 students use the skills from year 7 to produce childrens game. The Home work is set out to build on knowledge and produce independent research hungry students.

Tasks involve Workshop Safety, Components, Soldering and Flat Pack Structure.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 students opt to follow the AQA GCSE in Graphic Products. This GCSE is based upon 60% coursework and 40% exam. The 60% coursework is split into 2 sections, 20% for a coursework folder and 40& for a practical graphic based product made in the Graphics Workshop.

Products could be posters, t-shirts, point of sale display, dusiness cards, menus and concept ipad applications.

Wil I enjoy the course?

You will enjoy this subject if you enjoy creating your own ideas and turning them into business opportunities. The subject is both practical and technical. You will learn how to use software such as Photoshop and Publisher.. The subject supports definate career choices and further educational courses, and involves working independently and within a group.


Pupils are set regular homework to support the skills taught in lessons. Revision sessions are set in exam and mock exam build up.

How will I be monitored?

Our pupils are given a Design and Technology level at the beginning of the year and they are given opportunities to improve in each discipline over Key Stage 3. Our teachers assess work regularly and at the end of each module pupils are tested. Pupils also carry out self and peer assessment to understand how to develop. At various times of the year folders are carefully checked by staff to ensure pupils areworking to their full potential.

After School Clubs (Extra Curricular)

Each week Key Stage 3 can attend Street Art Club, and Key Stage 4 have an opportunity to research, revise or catch-up.
